The Department of Psychology aims to develop students into professionals who approach the needs of others with both realism and intelligence. Students explore a broad range of topics related to human nature, engaging with traditional and contemporary psychological research and methods from a distinctly Christian worldview. Whether pursuing graduate school or applying psychological knowledge in other professional fields, PLNU’s psychology programs provide students with opportunities to deepen their understanding and skills.

The Department of Applied Psychology prepares students to go beyond the classroom to make a real-world impact. In addition to learning theory and psychological principles, students learn how to apply their knowledge in areas like cultural sensitivity, ethical communication, and media psychology. Through service-learning opportunities in diverse communities, students are equipped with practical skills and experience to be effective leaders in their communities.

PLNU engages its faculty, staff, and students in an annual assessment cycle, where student learning is evaluated through appropriate courses, assessment results are analyzed, and necessary adjustments are made to improve the curriculum.

This complete process—encompassing planning, assessment, and improvement—is commonly referred to as “Closing the Loop.” It is illustrated in the Annual Assessment Cycle for each curricular program and culminates in a comprehensive six-year Program Review. This review includes a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and Action Plan, through which assessment findings directly inform financial and strategic planning.
